Your gas meter

There are three main types of gas meters: diagram based, rotary and turbine. The type allocated is based on your appliances, estimated usage and the pressure of the natural gas network in your street.

Meter location

Nearly all gas meters are located outside, in an area with easy access and adequate ventilation. This is usually on the corner of the house, opposite the driveway.

Commercial and industrial gas meters may require a wire enclosure or bollards to protect from damage or vandalism.

Meter clearance

For safety reasons, gas meters and/or associated assembly (e.g. gas regulator and relief valve) must be installed according to minimum clearance requirements.

If you’re unsure of these requirements, ask your plumber or gas fitter, as these are strictly enforced.

These apply to the position of the meter in relation to:

  • openable windows and doors,

  • ignition sources (e.g. hot water services, switches and other electrical equipment),

  • flammable materials,

  • driveways and vehicle movement, and

  • other services or utilities.

Meter Installation Registration Number

Once a gas service is installed, a unique Meter Installation Registration Number (MIRN) is permanently allocated to your property address. Your gas retailer or fitter may then use your MIRN to identify your installation, and this number will also appear on your gas bill together with the meter number of the specific gas meter installed at your address
